Groundbreaking Ceremony for the New RK MacDonald Nursing Home
The Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new RK MacDonald Nursing Home took place on June 11th, 2025. The ceremony was well attended, and it was so wonderful to have residents attend to have a hand on the shovel.

There was representation from many different groups at the Groundbreaking Ceremony, including the RK Residents and Staff, RK CEO Senior Leaders, the Congregation Of The Sisters of St. Martha, the Mayor, the Warden, Councillors of the Town and County, the Board of RK MacDonald Nursing Home, the RK MacDonald Nursing Home Foundation, the RK Family Council, Colliers Project Leaders, FBM Architect, PCL Construction, and the Antigonish Senior Care Van Society.
Breaking ground for the new long-term care facility for the residents of Antigonish and surrounding areas will leave a positive legacy for future generations. To everyone who has worked tirelessly to bring us to this moment, your feedback, vision, and dedication have made this possible. To our entire community, this will be your home, to represent our shared hopes, our shared values, and our shared future.

Construction Start Date for the New RK MacDonald Nursing Home
The New R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home
Preliminary investigations and pre-mobilization work has begun on the Church Street Extension for the new RK Macdonald Nursing Home project. Neighbors and the public are advised that full mobilization of the project will begin in the coming weeks. The site will be fenced for safety and the construction team has been notified to minimize impacts to the residents in the neighboring properties. Please reach out to us with any concerns. Thank you.

Exciting Future for R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home
The Government of Nova Scotia has taken a significant step toward enhancing the quality of life for long-term care residents in Antigonish by committing to developing a new R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home (RK). The new RK will be a state-of-the-art nursing home that meets the current long-term care facility requirements.
Located on a 13-acre lot on Church Street Extension, adjacent to the West River, the new RK will be a beautiful, modern facility with ample parking and lots of green space. Construction is expected to begin in late 2024, with the facility opening in early 2027.
The new home will feature 144 beautiful resident rooms, each equipped with a private bathroom. The space will be easy to navigate and will provide views of nature and easy access to outdoor spaces, including the gardens. It will be a bright, climate-controlled environment designed to accommodate clusters of people living in smaller groups. The facility’s features will ensure an appealing and inviting space that families, volunteers, and community members want to visit.
The current RK Nursing Home has been a vibrant part of the Antigonish community since its opening in 1958. The new facility and location will ensure the RK remains a valuable part of the community while enhancing residents’ ability to live full and abundant lives.
The new RK is a significant milestone for Antigonish, contributing to the region’s continued growth. This development coincides with other exciting projects in the area, including a new active transportation corridor, further expanding the community’s appeal and connectivity.
