POSITION: Administrative Dietitian
DEPARTMENT: Food Services
RESPONSIBLE TO: Director of Environmental & Food Services

Scope of Position:

Reporting to the Director of Environmental and Food Services, the Administrative Dietitian will work under direct supervision of the FT Clinical Dietitian to continue developing, coordinating, and evaluating nutritional services for the Home. In addition, the Administrative Dietitian assists the Director in identifying goals and objectives to further improve the overall scope and efficiency of the Food Services Department and sets the standards for safety, sanitation, and food quality.

Key Objectives of Role:

Technical and Systems Proficiency:

  • Assist the Dietitian in implementation of Food Service Software into the facility.
  • Standardization of recipes.
  • Utilizes software platforms, spreadsheets, and digital tools to enhance workflow, reporting accuracy, and communication efficiency.
  • Demonstrates strong computer literacy and the ability to troubleshoot and adapt to new systems.
  • The Administrative Dietitian will work with Gordon Food Services Cycle Menu Management software to input recipes and the current menu to assist in managing food waste, budget, and nutritional accuracy of menu items.

Training and Resource Development:

  • Assists in developing and delivering staff training materials and standard operating procedures.
  • Supports knowledge transfer and competency development across Food Service team.
  • Educate staff on food safety protocols, HACCP, and food service technology.
  • Update current Food Service policies and procedures for procurement, storage, preparation of food, and food safety processes.
  • With Director and Clinical Dietitian, updates current Food Service policies and procedures, food as by the Department of Health and Infection Control Guidelines to ensure compliance.

Waste Reduction and Efficiency:

  • Assist in implementing systems for raw and complete food waste tracking, focusing on reducing overproduction and enhancing menu planning to reduce waste.
  • Work with the Dietitian to optimize food production while maintaining nutritional accuracy, ensuring minimal food waste while meeting residents’ dietary needs and preferences.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Understands that the Resident and family are central to all departmental activities, services, and decisions.
  2. Establishes and maintains working relationships and performs all work in keeping with the Mission, Vision, Core Values, and philosophy of resident-centered care of the RK MacDonald Nursing Home and professional Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics.
  3. Work with the Clinical Dietitian on texture modified diets, recipes and testing to ensure texture modified diets align with IDDSI standards.
  4. Assists in educating staff as needed on testing procedures for texture modified diets, using CMM software to help with production workload and more.
  5. Work with the Clinical Dietitian to update regular, soft, and puree menus to ensure that residents receive a nutritionally adequate diet based on Canada’s Food Guide.
  6. Participates in various committees and meetings according to personal interests and / or the home’s needs. Examples include: (Resident Council Meeting, Food Service department meeting)
  7. Be familiar with the following R.K. manuals; Fire & Emergency Plans, Departmental Policies and Procedures, WHMIS, Occupational Health and Safety, and other programs in place.
  8. Maintains certification of Food Handling Course, Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (certification is valid for 5 years).
  9. Performs additional duties as assigned.

 

Required Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Foods and Nutrition from a recognized University.
  • Completion of Dietetic Internship approved by Dietitians of Canada.
  • Member of Nova Scotia Dietetic Association or eligible for membership.

 

Required Experience:

  • Previous experience in a long-term care facility preferred.
  • Familiarity with food service operation and equipment would be an asset.

 

Additional Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with computer operation would be an asset.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Atmosphere may at times be warm and noisy.
