POSITION: Therapeutic Recreation Programmer
DEPARTMENT: Recreation
RESPONSIBLE TO: Director of Recreation, Spiritual, & Volunteers

As a member of the Recreation Team, the Recreation Programmer provides Recreation programs and opportunities for the Residents, which allows for their engagement in their own Home, their R.K. Community, and maintain contact with the larger community. Reporting to the Director of Recreation, Spiritual, and Volunteers, the programmer is responsible for the delivery of recreation programming services of the department as well as assisting with the delivery of Spiritual services. The essential functional areas of responsibility include providing Recreation/Leisure/Spiritual programming and leading, encouraging, and supporting Residents, staff, and Volunteers in the delivery of these programs and opportunities utilizing their strengths and expertise. Key Responsibilities:

Provide Recreation services, programs, and opportunities for the Residents, which allows for engagement with their own Home, their R.K. Community, and maintain contact with the larger Community.

  • To plan and schedule group recreation programming in coordination with Director/Team based on an understanding of the Resident needs and abilities and the available resources from the Home and the community
  • To assist with development of the recreational assessment and plan for each Resident which will be completed upon admission, is included in the interdisciplinary plan of care, and is updated as the Resident’s individual needs change.
  • To plan, implement, schedule, and evaluate Recreation program with an understanding of the Resident’s needs and abilities and utilizing available resources from the home and the community.
  • To set up, transport (if necessary), supervise, and facilitate scheduled programs.
  • To organize work in a time effective manner to complete all required elements of program planning.
  • To facilitate opportunities for community interaction, intergenerational programs and relationships, cultural exposure, and more.
  • To motivate Residents to grow and improve their own health through Recreation programs and activities that involve some challenge, excitement, rewards, choices, concentration, and pure fun.
  • To ensure that the Standards of Practice for Recreation as a Therapy and Service (2006) is used as a basis for the delivery of recreation and leisure services.
  • Assist with developing annual and long-term goals and objectives for the department.
  • Promote positive relationships with all the departments and with the local community.
  • Participate in Recreation Staff meetings and contributes toward periodic reviews of program effectiveness.
  • Prepare Resident updates for care conferences for the Director and attend when required.
  • To provide education, encouragement, promotion, and support for the elders in their independent leisure pursuits.
  • To collect, monitor, and document program participation daily in any program and make periodic reports to the Director. And, actively evaluate resident 1st voice participation in programming for data collection.
  • To inform the Director of departmental needs in relation to personnel, space, equipment, and supplies.
  • Co-operates with other staff, volunteers, and Elders to promote effective communication within the facility. Supporting an interdisciplinary team approach.
  • Serves on committees as Directed by Administration. Understands that the Resident and family are central to all departmental activities, services, and decisions.
  • Set up, prepare, and assist with the delivery of Spiritual programming and services in coordination with Director and religious leaders.

Assist with the Volunteer Program and provide a positive experience for both the Resident and the Volunteer.

  • Assist with training, support, and recognition of Volunteers.
  • Direct orientation, work facilitation, and supervision of volunteers and/or student placements provided to enhance Programming.

Knowledge and Skills

  • The NSRPH (Nova Scotia Recreation Professionals in Health) Standards of Practice. Program planning, adaptation, leadership, and communication techniques.
  • Annual WHMIS & Fire Safety In-Service & are familiar with the Emergency Plan Manual & Policy and Procedures.
  • Proven excellence in facilitation skills.

Educational Qualifications

  • 2 year Diploma in Therapeutic Recreation or the equivalent to NSRPH classification for Programmer II
  • Regular & consistent attendance is essential.

Experience required

  • Minimum of 3 years recent experience in a Long-Term Care and/or Community setting.
  • Proven leadership ability, excellent communication skills, and facilitation skills.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to foster, demonstrate and maintain good public relations with Residents, families, visitors, and Volunteers.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and other members of the health care team.
  • Ability to work independently and complete assigned work.

Resident Support Worker (RSW)

POSITION: Resident Support Worker (RSW)
DEPARTMENT: Clinical Services
RESPONSIBLE TO: Director of Clinical Services

The Resident Support Worker is an important role in supporting the needs of residents in the Home. Working collaboratively with the CCA’s to support the activities of daily living, while supporting residents’ physical and emotional needs. The RSW is responsible to the Team Lead RN or LPN in the Care Area. They are assigned to work throughout the home and provide extra support to the care area they are working in. The RSW is a team player, who is resident centered in their role. They are adaptable to changes of environment and needs that arise during the day. A good work ethic, initiative, and ability to meet the physical demands in a fast pace environment is essential in this role.

 

Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Answer call bells
  • Assist with mealtimes
  • Assist residents with eating and drinking
  • Assist with setting up and cleaning up from meals

POSITION: Director, Rehabilitation Services
DEPARTMENT: Walking Stick Rehab
RESPONSIBLE TO: CEO

As a member of the Leadership Team, the Director of Rehabilitation Services, either an Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist provides the day to day management of the Walking Stick Rehabilitation services operation and its personnel and provides a vital link between the Rehabilitation Services department and its personnel and the leadership team. Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Rehabilitation Services is responsible for the overall management and delivery of services of the department. The essential functional areas of responsibility include the provision of Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy services to the Residents of the RK MacDonald Nursing Home, and provide educational in-services to the families and staff. In keeping with our Mission, Vision and Core Values and our philosophy of Resident Centered Care, the Director of Rehabilitation Services, as a partner in the provision of care and support of our Residents, represents the home in a positive, professional, efficient and confidential manner.

1. Effectively manage the Walking Stick departmental budget ensuring that the annual budget is not exceeded

  • Monthly review of annual budget and implementing corrective action as appropriate
  • Oversees submission of departmental payroll
  • Annual review of equipment / supplies
  • Purchasing, ordering, stock and inventory control
  • Capital equipment procurement

2. Coordinate the provision of Walking Stick departmental services that are Resident centered and that support and reflect the Mission, Vision and Values of the RK Mac Donald Nursing Home. This will involve a yearly process of developing, reviewing, evaluating, revising and implementing

  • Departmental goals and objectives

Experience Required

Annual Progress Report 2022-2023

It has been a busy year for the RK MacDonald Nursing Home Board of Directors. As I write this, our Home continues to address and live with the challenges of a post Pandemic. Now more than ever it is so important to thank the staff of the RK for their dedication, support and the incredible care provided during these challenging times.

The Board of Directors take their responsibilities in ensuring that our direction is captured on our Vison Statement creating “An alive and vibrant community built on meaningful relationships that celebrate and encourages a uniqueness of spirit and character” and is sustained by our Mission Statement in “Providing loving, dignified quality and enabling all people to live full and abundant lives“.

As a Board we are kept well informed of RK business. Our committees including Executive, Quality Safety & Governance, Building &Grounds, Finance and Infrastructure Renewal Steering Committee work closely with Senior Leaders providing monthly reports. In addition, reports from the CEO, Director of Clinical Services, RK MacDonald Foundation, Family Council and Resident Council are presented at our monthly Board meetings.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to personally thank our former board members Sister Stella Chaff, Sue Ellen McCarron, and Mary MacLellan, who we can all agree had a big impact during their tenure on the Board.

A special welcome is extended to our newly minted Board members Sister Catherine Ann MacGillivray and Gerald MacDonald – (representatives for the Congregation of the Sisters of St Martha) and Harris McNamara, (Municipality of the County of Antigonish, District 9 County Councilor).

Key Board Focus Areas:

  • Preparing for Accreditation Canada Surveyors in the fall of 2023.
  • Promoting a supportive role for the RK MacDonald Foundation, Family and Resident Council.
  • Establishing community relationships with our Indigenous partners
  • Developing ongoing role descriptions for our Directors, Executive members and Chairs of Committees.  Delivering a variety of education sessions for our Board of Directors
  • Supporting the promotion of cultural diversity, equity and inclusion within the RK community
  • Supporting our Infrastructure Renewal Steering committee as we journey towards the new RK MacDonald Nursing Home and ensuring the inclusion of all stakeholders into the design of the new RK MacDonald Nursing Home
  • Continuing and promoting collaborative relationships with our external partners such as St Francis Xavier University, Town and Municipal leaders and representatives.

Reporting to the Director of Environmental &Food Services, the Maintenance Worker provides the general maintenance and repair for the facility. As an employee of the RK Mac Donald Nursing Home, he/she has a responsibility to be involved in providing a stimulating environment for the residents.

Functions and Responsibilities

  4. Work as a team with other departments in the Home.

  8. Work under constant interruptions in daily work routines.
  9. Knowledge & practice of the safe use and care of all department equipment as per established procedure.
  10. Report necessary home/equipment repairs to Department Manager or Supervisor.
  11. Assist Director or Supervisor in evaluating new equipment and chemical products.
  12. Attend and participate in education in-service, workshops, seminars, etc.
  13. Complete assigned duties that pertain to the successful completion of a yearly Preventive Maintenance Program.
  14. Maintains all systems and auxiliary equipment such as boilers, generators, motors, ventilation, oxygen, hot water tanks, etc. thru Preventative Maintenance Program.
  15. Perform carpentry duties as deemed necessary by the Director and use of equipment; i.e. table saw, skill saw.
  16. Perform work around walk-in freezers and fridges in the building.
  17. Ability to hook up resident’s phone lines and cable in rooms.
  18. Complete all necessary repairs and follow up as assigned by Director or Supervisor through written repair/hazard requisitions, supply requisitions, or replacement parts for equipment as needed.
  19. Ability to perform various plumbing duties such as pipe replacement, valve replacement, toilet and sink replacement, replacing drain lines, etc.
  20. Keep walkways clear from litter/debris, snow, etc. (R.K. & Ant. Manor).
  21. Transport Lab work to St. Martha’s Regional Hospital and provide other transportation and pickup services as requested with Nursing Home vehicle.
  22. Conduct or assist with Fire Drills/ Mock Exercises of Emergency Codes as per Director’s request.
  23. Paint areas of the home upon request.
  24. Current certification in Confined Space and Transportation of Dangerous Goods, and NCVI.
  25. Maintains storage in shed and resident storage.
  26. Set up and store outdoor furniture.
  27. Snow removal and salt maintenance in all areas for the R.K. & Antigonish Manor via shovel (manual) and facility tractor.
  28. On call for maintenance through use of cell phone
  29. Familiar with Departmental Policy and Procedure Manual.
  30. Access or attend required in-service training for staff provided on-site & via on-line Surge Learning tool provided by the RK.
  31. Keep Fire Protection Maintenance Log up to date.
  32. Perform other related duties as requested by the Director or Supervisor.

Education, Training, Experience

Must have a valid Nova Scotia Driver’s License.

Good physical health, ability to work independently and with others, ability to follow verbal and written instructions, ability to learn the operation of equipment, ability to perform repetitive tasks, and ability to work in a warm congested area, ability to operate and run computerized maintenance monitoring system (Honeywell).  Must be willing to be on call for maintenance issues after hours.  Grade 12 Education.

Work Experience/Training

Experience in some of the following trades; plumbing, carpentry, painting, boiler maintenance, refrigeration, electronics, and phone and cable hook up with a recognized employer.  Any certificates in these areas considered an asset.  Minimum 2-5 years’ experience in a large building complex required.

  • Thorough knowledge of institutional food production, safety, and sanitation in food handling.
  • Must be adept at reading, comprehending, and following complex dietary instructions, menus, and recipes.
  • Sound comprehension and judgment, with the understanding of food handling and preparation practices and recipe adjusting.
  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent.
  • Completion (Certificate) of a formal and practical training in food preparation from a recognized cooking school.

Reporting to the Director of Clinical Services, the InterRAI Nurse is accountable for the planning, coordinating, and the ongoing InterRAI assessments.  Establishes and maintains working relationships and performs all work in keeping with the Mission, Vision, Values and philosophy of resident centered care of the RK MacDonald Nursing Home. The InterRAI Nurse serves as a professional role model as a partner in the provision of care and support of our Residents.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments on residents using the InterRAI assessment tool on the Civica (Momentum) application.
  • Collaborate with nursing home staff, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to develop individualized care plans for residents.
  • Monitor the progress of residents and make adjustments to their care plans as needed
  • Ensure that all assessments and care plans comply with nursing home policies, and InterRAI guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of assessments and care plans.
  • Participate in training and continuing education programs to maintain knowledge of InterRAI assessment tool updates and changes.
  • Serve as a resource for nursing home staff on InterRAI assessment tool and care planning.
  • Participation on the admission process.

 

Competencies specifics to position

  • Ability to complete thorough nursing assessments.
  • Strong computer skills or willingness to learn.
  • Experience with Microsoft excel, word etc., is considered an assets.
  • Strong organization skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated professional and positive behavior.
  • Reliable, with regular and consistent attendance

 

Educational Qualifications:

  • RN or BScN at an accredited School/College of Nursing
  • Current registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of electronic medical record systems an asset.
  • Recent experience in geriatric setting preferred.

Foot Care Nurse

POSITION:                                    Foot Care Nurse
DEPARTMENT:                             Nursing
RESPONSIBLE/REPORTS TO:    Director of Clinical Services

Scope of Position:

Reporting to the Director of Clinical Services, the Foot Care Nurse is responsible for ensuring that the quality of the Foot Care services of our residents compliant with legislation and standards of practice.  Establishes and maintains working relationships and performs all work in keeping with the Mission, Vision, Values and philosophy of resident centered care of the RK MacDonald Nursing Home. The Foot Care Nurse serves as a professional role model as a partner in the provision of care and support of our Residents.

Duties include but not limited to:

  • Lead and develop foot care services in the home.
  • Regular foot assessment of all residents.
  • Provides best practices of foot care to all residents.
  • Provides opportunities and supports education of CCA’s and other nursing staff.
  • Provides individualized treatment plans for residents including recommendations for Advanced Foot Care.
  • Maintains a thorough and accurate resident health record with each resident.
  • Practice foot care services in collaboration with external foot care practitioners.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Valid registration with a provincial nursing College, as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
  • Advanced foot care nurse training and certification preferred.
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment or clinical setting an asset.
  • Experience in caring for individuals with diabetes and/or vascular disease, compression therapy an asset.

 

Experience Required:

Experience in a health care setting, preferably 2 years previous experience within a Long Term Care or Hospital environment.
